The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Sessa Aurunca, built in the 12th century over Roman remains, is a significant example of Romanesque architecture. Renowned for its mosaic floor and intricately carved ambo, it blends medieval and Baroque art within a liturgical setting of great historical importance.

Saint Leo IX, the city’s patron saint, is especially venerated in Sessa Aurunca, remembered for his miraculous visit in 1053. During the traditional Easter Monday procession (Lunedì in Albis), his statue is carried alongside that of Our Lady of the People, accompanied by children dressed in liturgical garments.

Cream-colored Chasuble made of cotton/viscose/lurex fabric. The orphreys are crafted using mixed techniques and materials, including gold and bronze trims, crimson velvet, and various embroideries.

Paired with a matching Mitre.

01
Inspiration

The design for the Cathedral takes inspiration from one of the few original elements still preserved: the ambo.
Richly decorated with symbolic natural imagery, it served as the central reference for representing the identity of the Cathedral. The piece also pays tribute to the city’s two patron saints: Our Lady of the People and Saint Leo IX.

02
Design

The graphic development of the project is rooted in the accurate digital reproduction of the original paintings on the Ambo. This computer-based process guided the careful selection of fabrics and techniques, ensuring full respect for the historic artistic detail and integrity of the source.

03
Creation

The embroidery, executed in gold tones, features intertwined trims in gold and crimson velvet, created using a manual loom. The two iconographic panels were made using a mixed embroidery technique. The entire piece was then fully handcrafted, honoring traditional liturgical textile practices.
